Fall Color Reports by Yooper Steve :: Sept 28th, 2020 :: Comments
Welcome to Week 9 of the Upper Peninsula Fall Color Report in Michigan's beautiful Upper Peninsula.
This will be the last UP Fall Color Report for 2020, it kind of feels weird ending the UP Fall Color Reports with a couple days left in September, but that is what happens color comes and goes. First off I would like to thank everyone for visiting FunintheUP.com UP Fall Color Reports, this fall was one of the best color seasons for quite some time I watched the color progress each week and it was fun. I drove just over 4500 miles traveling across the UP since the Week 1 report in the Upper Peninsula. Thanks to each and every one of you, your comments, questions, and to those I have met out there on the trails and roads from recent days and back many years ago. FunintheUP continues to be the #1 source for UP Fall Color reports and for UP Snowfall Reports. I wouldn't do these reports, 100s of LIVE videos, and other videos if you weren't interested or I didn't think there was value to it. Let's keep having FunintheUP together, see you on the trails or open roads across the UP. Get ready for the 2020/21 Dail UP Snowfall Reports. It is going to be a snowy and cold winter, are you ready? Not me yet I still want some sunshine and 60s, but I sure do enjoy fall!

So did we hit peak are we past peak, is it still worth it to come to the Upper Peninsula for fall colors? There's been a tons of questions this week, sorry I haven't been able to get to each an everyone of you. Colors are 70%-90%, peaking, peak, or past peak. There aren't many areas that are still very green. There's a minimum of 70% color to peaking color in some areas across the eastern UP and southern UP, Mackinaw Island, and Drummond Island. Color has been amazing this year, and if you were following the UP fall color report you were probably one of the thousands of people I saw on the roads across the UP this last week. Color came on strong and is going out strong. What many don't realize when color reaches 60-70% it can be a matter of 3-5 days and peak is here and going out. There were areas I was at literally 12 hrs before I saw the most gorgeous reds, bright oranges, then the next day 25% leaf loss with few reds remaining with 50% dull muting color starting. Some wonder why I start the reports in late July and early August it is because I want to keep people aware of the color progression, things change quickly, temperatures, rain, dryness, amount of sunlight, winds, these all affect the progression. Check out the regional reports below.

If you enjoyed these Fall Color Reports and it was useful to you please considering helping me by donating any $$ amount it helps ensure I can keep traveling the UP to bring you FunintheUP and keep promoting our beautiful part of the world. Western UP - Overall: Peak - Past Peak
The Western UP was on fire this week for fall color, I saw it go from 60% color to peak/past peak in a matter of 4 days. There is still color and yes good color. The backcountry roads are amazing to drive on right now, the forests are just blazing with yellows, reds, and oranges, go ahead go off roading. Enjoy the smells and sounds of the quiet forests. Views from Bald Mountain (view TravelIronwood.com for directions how to get there) were awesome, an underated place to view the fall colors, it is a drive, but many times you'll find yourself alone and that is always a great peaceful time, just you and nature. Places like Lake of the Clouds are at peak now, the reds have faded along the Lake of the Clouds and yellows are a blaze few yellowish-green hues remain across the forest treetops. The interior portion along South Boundary road has reached peak and leaves are falling. Summit Peak views are starting to turn a bit dull, still lots of bright yellows late this week. Overall for the Porkies expect good color through Thursday maybe Friday. After the weekend things will start getting really dull and you'll see lots of bare trees with all the rain and winds this week. Areas around Ironwood are still good yet, Copper Peak views are amazing still, things are still pretty colorful, your western views a bit more than your south eastern right now. This week things will start becoming more dull for color by Saturday. Don't let this stop you, color will still be beautiful for most people, the views are breath taking anytime from Copper Peak. Areas near Bergland are really colorful and will become less colorful as the week goes on. M64 north to Silver City was real nice this last week and color will be fading quickly on this stretch and has begun a bit already. Around Lake Gogebic the color is still hanging on but already seeing those reds disappear. Wolf Mountain views were great late week, this week the color should turn yellow and dullish brown with some leaf loss. Around the Watersmeet and Paulding areas color was excellent and bright with still a few patches of green late week, but as this week progresses expect past peak color. Bond falls was packed with people so if you're looking for a peaceful lonlier adventure to Bond wait a couple weeks, but you won't have the color however. Agate falls is a bit less crowded and the views from the trestle bridge are amazing. For the real adventurous person take a hike down the steep hillside to the bottom of the falls for amazing views, careful with all the rain we have had and will be getting it will be slippery.

Northern UP - Overall: Peak - Past Peak
Color in the Northern UP is the best it will get, the last couple days things have been amazing. Some real nice colors in the oak trees this year. The forests are so so colorful, the backroads are my favorite with all the colors in the woods and the dirt two tracks just filled with leaves, the sounds are so amazing. Color in many areas in the higher elevations turned peak earlier in the week last week and turned past peak on Thursday and Friday. Leaf loss is starting to reach 25% and expect it to become more with the rains and winds through Thursday. Along Lake Superior things are still turning, just now reaching 75-80% color with peak hitting by midweek. Views from Brockway are the best right now, still going to be good through about Wednesday as the eastern side of Rocky Ridge change color. Your southern and south west views are full peak now and going to be fading daily and leaf loss is started already. Views along Bete Grise are colorful but you can see the progression of peak now, not many areas of yellowish green left. US41 drive is great still, leaves are holding on but don't expect it to be as wonderful after Thursday, this rain and wind will blow those leaves off quickly. US41 from Phoenix to Calumet is colorful and starting past peak. Painesdale to Mass City is past peak with lots of leaf loss starting. Color along Hwy 45 south to Bruce Crossing is great but it has reached peak and starting to turn past peak. Ontonagon and Silver city areas are full color with some areas past peak, still a few bright yellows from aspens and birch turning. Reds along US41 from Chassell to Keweenaw Bay have faded or left the trees, still a few birch and aspens changing to keep things sorta bright. Many of the maples are the best they are going to get. L'Anse area to Skanee is great, it has reached peak with a few patches of greenish yellow. Interior portions and higher elevations are past peak in the Huron mountains and lots of leaves on the ground across the backroads. The rivers and streams are amazing with some color still hanging on and those yellows filling in the forests. Alberta area is past peak now and has been since Friday. Still a few nice reds here and there, but expect your color to leave the trees soon with the rain and winds. Past Canyon falls to King Lake there is plenty of leaf loss a little color left but overall past peak, this area changes so quick each year and is one of the first to hit past peak. Covington Jct to Kenton is still colorful but fading quickly. Your drive down US141 from Covington to Amaza has all but reached peak and past peak as we go through the week.

Central UP - Overall 80% - Past Peak

Looking for good color yet, you'll find some in the lower elevations around Marquette. Areas around Three Lakes and Michigamme are past peak color, still some nice colorful spots but overall color is fading already. Views from Mount Marquette just became colorful this weekend. Sugarloaf and Hogsback were still good yet, yellows dominating now that reds are fading. Country roads 510 and 550 are still nice drives for color the forests are turning yellow now with some reds and oranges still bright in the understory. Areas around Negaunee and Ishpeming are great now, color has reached peak, a few areas still getting to peak but not many. Good driving all around the backroads for color. US41 from Harvey to Rapid River is real nice, reds are fading though, good yellows are starting to appear. The drive across 94 from US41 to M28 south of Munising is really colorful and worth a drive and stopping at AuTrain Falls, Laughing Whitefish falls, and Wagner falls.

Eastern UP - Overall 70% - Peak
The eastern UP has reached 70% for the most part with a few areas peak now. South of Munising there are still a few areas around Boot Lake that are still turning colors still some fresh reds hanging out. North of Elkhorn and near Steuben colors are really nice, a bit of green still bit color is still great. Tahquamenon falls area is full color. Areas from Newberry to Strongs are good color right now. Views from Mission Hill are good and should hit peak this week early on. North of the Mackinac Bridge color is good around East Lake and Trout Lake. A drive up 123 or I75 north is really colorful with still a few patches of green. Out near Cedarville there is some good color but still some green to change yet. You can find plenty of color on the far eastern end of the UP though. Color in Pictured Rock National Lakeshore forests are really colorful with plenty of leaves hitting the ground now it is now turning peak and will be past peak by mid week, you still should find some decent color in the forest though especially those yellows as the undestory changes into bright yellow. US2 from Mackic Bridge to Manistique is still colorful peak should be coming by end of the week. Plenty of color along this stretch for some nice pictures. Any drive up 77 or 117 you'll enjoy right now as it is really colorful with still a bit of color to go, but it should be plenty to satisfy you.

Southern UP - Overall 60%-70%

Color in the southern UP is ok, but not extremely colorful yet, there are pockets of nice red and orange with some aspens and birch now starting to change. Get out there on the roads and find the color. By the end of the week color should be really nice.

Fall Color Reports by Yooper Steve :: Sept 21st, 2020 :: Comments
Welcome to Week 8 of the Upper Peninsula Fall Color Report in Michigan's beautiful Upper Peninsula.
Another beautiful week in the Upper Peninsula. I love this season, no bugs, beautiful colored leaves, cooler temps, gentle winds, brisk winds, sounds of leaves under your feet, the gently flowing creek with leaves floating around. Fall it is a wonderful time of the year.

First off, let me say color this year has already been amazing, the next 3-10 days is prime time, leaves are already falling off trees. Tons of questions about peak color this past week, just let me say, we are close to hitting peak in some areas, while other areas are only hitting 40% color. Everywhere in the UP has color and if you wait to long to get to the UP you miss out. So if you haven't already made plans for a place to stay it may be to late. Many Airbnb, hotels, campgrounds, and cabins are booked, don't expect to come up to the UP right now especially in your bigger cities and towns or touristy lookout areas to have vacancy, call ahead and book something if it is open book it or someone calling after you will.

We did have some cold weather again during the evenings with frost overnight a couple nights. Daytime temps were in the upper 50s and some areas saw low to mid 70s. This was a the perfect time to get out and explore the UP, go kayaking, hiking, and get some of those chores that needed to be finished before it gets really cold. During the week we saw some nice progression of fall colors across the entire UP. Areas by Lake Superior have finally gotten up to around 40-50% color now and interior portions are upwards of 70-90% color. I am seeing lots of green yet on the understory along the roads yet, but it is now starting to get more yellow in the woods. The ferns along roadsides have now turned mostly brown and low lying brush and trees have now turned yellowish green and some orange colors mixed in. This week there will be some areas that hit peak in the central, northern, and western Upper Peninsula. If you are waiting for color I wouldn't wait much after this week unless it is in the areas along Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, southern UP, or farther eastern Upper Peninsula. Check out the regional reports below.

Western UP
The Western UP is coming along now. The color has really started filling in nice. Views from the Porkies were wonderful, still a tad bit of green and lots of yellows, surprisingly some nice reds have popped up this year unlike the last 3 or 4 years, a nice bonus. Most everyone I talked to at Lake of the Clouds it was their first time to the Upper Peninsula and first time to the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park. They were loving the views as do I everytime I go there. This week we should see the color really filling in and popping, this week along with next week will be excellent for viewing colors. After about the 3rd color will start fading and you'll probably get a bit of leaf loss. Color on Lake Superior side along the Porkies ski hill was about 50% color early in the week, probably has reached about 60% now, peak will probably be about end of the week and early next week. Traveling interior of the Porkies along South Boundary road, views from the air color was better on the eastern side and western side a bit less color until you get further in past Nonesuch mine. Views from Summit Peak overlook showed a little more color than Lake of the Clouds overlook a lot more reds and color seen. Expect this view to hit peak by next week Monday or Tuesday. Areas around Ironwood, Bessemer, and Wakefield were looking good, color is good but not peak yet, by the weekend expect nice color and through next week but by end of next week may start seeing those reds and oranges turn a bit drab as the yellows start popping from the birch and aspens. M28 from Wakefiled to Bergland is pretty colorful, more around Bergland area and up Hwy 64 towards Silver City. Nice color is showing up now in the Trap Hills if you enjoy hiking head to the North Country trail anywhere in the Trap Hills, there are many overlooks and views will be all yours as you stand by youself or a friend taking it all in.
Overall 50%-80%
Peak will be Sept 27th - Oct 3rd.

Northern UP
Lots of color change up near Copper Harbor especially along US41 covered drive, this week is prime time for a drive. This will still be a nice drive for another 2 weeks as the leaves start falling. Views from the east Brockwawy Mtn lookout that overlooks Copper Harbor towards East Bluff are still a bit green but it now giving a nice show of color of yellows and oranges. Further up the drive looking towards the south towards Keweenaw Mountain Lodge and Lake Medora color has reached about 65-70% and by end of the week it should reach 70-85%. The westen views towards Lake Bailey and Agate Harbor are about the same percentage as eastern views. The drive from Copper Harbor to Calumet is colorful but not totally peak along the roadsides yet, views from the air are very colorful. Along M203 from McLain State Park to Hancock is colorful still a bit of green but seeing nice color along the Portage Canal now. Color along the canal has reached about 50% color expecting that it will reach 70% by the end of the week. Peak along the Houghton and Hancock area should be by next week. The drive along M28 from Painesdale to M38 Jct is one you need to make quickly, this is amazing right now especially after Toivola through Donken. Those reds along the marshes and small lakes around Donken are so bright with reds and oranges. From Houghton to Chassell is pretty colorful, still a bit of green yet. Those reds along US41 outside Chassell along the Sturgeon Sloughs have now started to fad and leaves are starting to fall off. Color all the way to Baraga has progressed, but the color is still coming along, still mild along this stretch being close to Lake Superior. Once you get outside L'Anse and reach Alberta color really starts popping, should be hitting peak in a couple days, with color staying nice through the weekend. Skanee area is very colorful, upper regions of the Huron Mountains are real colorful, those backrounds are ablaze with color, lots of leaves now starting to fall. Color is slower to progress closer to Lake Superior of Point Abbaye and the mouth of the Huron river. Covington Jct to Kenton has gotten a bit more colorful now, it has reached about 70% color and the drive from Covington to Crystal Falls is real nice right now, another wonderful drive to see very nice color, around 70% color some areas may reach 90% this weekend.
Overall 40%-80%
Peak will be Sept 25th - Oct 1st.

Central UP
The Marquette area is reaching 40-50% in the lower elevations along Lake Superior, still fairly green patchy areas, but color on the tree tops has filled in with color overall. Roadside drives are still a bit green the foliage will be another 7-10 days before it starts getting good. Views from Sugarloaf and Hogsback are better south and west, areas to the north and east from these lookouts are still a bit green but you can see those yellowish hues showing through. You still have time to get up there to see peak color, but you wouldn't complain with such beautiful views year-round. View up off Thomas Rock have gotten pretty nice right now, only will get better during this week and into next week color will start fading especially southern western views. Views from Mount Marquette are showing a little green yet but lots of yellow tree tops now, soon it will be very nice, hitting this spot up this weekend should be worth the trip. South of Marquette along Co Rd. 492 and 480 aren't to bad, good drives with plenty of color. Around Palmert was pretty colorful, and further over off 565 and 581 were nice and colorful. Take a stop at some of the waterfalls in these areas like Ely Falls, Schwietzer creek falls, and Black river falls. Out to the west along US41 from Negaunee to Michigamme has gotten pretty good, especially after Jct 95 to the west. If you're traveling down US41 south from Harvey you're seeing good color near Kiva and Trenary now all the way down to Gladstone. The drive from US41 to Chatham and Munising is really good now, not at peak but around 60-70% in many places. Around Munising colors are better in the southern areas and western areas, further north east color is coming along now closer to the lake. The drive down H58 is a good drive, more colorful by the day.
Overall 40%-80%
Peak will be Sept 25th - Oct 3rd.

Eastern UP
Eastern UP is now getting good. Views along M28 from Shingleton to Newberry have gotten some nice reds popping up, through Seney there are still a few reds hanging around and more are popping up further east towards Newberry. Tahqaumenon falls area is now around 50% color some spots perhaps 60%, peak color should be around the start of October and good color from the 2nd-5th, expect a lot of yellows by this time. Views from Mission Hill have gotten good, not full peak yet but still colorful enough for the first time leaf peeper to the UP, can't go wrong with views here anytime of the year. Around the Soo color has been getting better, still a bit to reach peak but enough reds are out this year along I75 your main route into the Soo. If you want good color right now in the eastern UP stay interior off Lake Superior or Lake Michigan. Views off the Cut River Bridge are still greenish yellow, some nice color spots though. Highway 123 is pretty colorful, not yet peak but good color has started showing up. West along US2 after Brevort is showing signs of life now, color is popping in some areas outside Epofette and Naubinway and more as you get away from Lake Michigan. For some good color drives this week take 117 north, and 77 north to M28. Also hit some of the backroads for some good color displays. Color around Curtis is pretty good now, by the weekend it should get real colorful. Color is starting to pop around Manistique Lake and South Manistique lake, those staying at Chamberlin's Ole Forest Inn this weekend into next week are in for a treat. The drive along US2 from Manistique to Rapid River is around 40-50% color maybe a few spots with more but by the beginning of October it should be really colorful.
Overall 30%-60%
Peak will be Oct 1st - Oct9th.

Southern UP
Good color starting now in the southern area of the UP. Wasn't a lot of color up from Wisconsin into Michigan along US41, further north better color. US2 from Powers to Iron River is showing good color not a ton of it but some nice hotspots and colorful trees. As you go north in the counties color gets beter, especially in your higher elevations and around the rivers and lakes. North of Randville take 69 to the east and you'll see a bit of color then take Norway Lake Rd north to 426 and head east again. North of Wells State Park you'll want to take 551 north along the Cedar river for some good popping color, by next week it should get really nice, follow it all the way north till Iniantown and Harris locations, go east off US41/US2 to Bark River.
Overall 30%-50%
Peak will be Oct 3rd - Oct 12th.

Fall Color Reports by Yooper Steve :: Sept 15th, 2020 :: Comments
Welcome to Week 7 of the Upper Peninsula Fall Color Report in Michigan's beautiful Upper Peninsula.
What an interesting last couple weeks weather wise. We have had very windy early November gales the beginning of Sept, frost, heavy rains, a day of nonstop rain and drizzle like we used to get, cooler temps down into the mid 30s and low 40s, and also back up into the 60s and reaching close to 80 degrees today Sept 15th. The last few days here in the UP have been very nice, mid 60s low 70, so it has been nice hiking and kayaking the last couple days. I have actually enjoyed this varying weather, a little storm action, some cool weather to get your ready for mhhhmmm *cough*, W I N T E R. There I said it, winter, but Yooper Steve, don't rush it you say, well a good Yooper always gets ready this time of the year, winter sometimes meets fall, it seems like that has been the case the last few fall color seasons, but here's to hoping it stays away until October 31st eh! Anyway fall color is coming a long real nice and seems really fast the last couple weeks in some areas. There are other areas close to Lake Superior this year are running about normal for color change, that cool weather didn't affect it much because the BIG LAKE keeps things really mild so it isn't a surprise things are just starting there. Interior however is well on it's way to peak. Well enough with the appetizer for this week, let's get to the meat-and-potatos.

Western UP
The Western UP of Michigan one of the best places to view fall colors in the Upper Peninsula. This week you will see lots of changes interior portions of the Porkies (Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park), areas along South Boundary Road are now starting to fill in especially around Overlooked falls and Summit Peak. The views from Lake of the Clouds is still fairly green yet, there are hints of color now, the yellows are starting to pop, with a few reds down in the regions along the Carp River. Standing on the beach before you enter the Porkies you can see the hills starting to turn pretty patchy but you can see those yellow and orange hues now. You can't go wrong visiting the Porkies anytime of the year so don't worry you'll still have amazing views with a little color right now, but it won't be peak this week. Views from Copper Peak are starting to get better for color, things now looking more colorful, but it still isn't filled in where most people really enjoy it for fall, but still the views from the ski jump are amazing. Beginning next week you should have some real nice color, with peak hitting soon. Views from Mount Zion are exceptional especially on a clear day, pretty hazy though the last few days with the smoke from the west. Still needs to fill in you'll see more color in the eastern views this week and as things progress you should start seeing some nice color fill in replacing those still yet greens from the aspens and birch. US2 from Ironwood to Wakefield has some nice patchy areas. North along Co Rd 519 from Wakefield to South Boundary Rd has some good reds and nice color now, still a bit till it really fills in but it is a pleasant colorful drive. Around Bergland there is some nice color enough to satisfy even the first time color peeper in the UP. North up M64 to Silver City will greet you with plenty of colorful displays along the marshy areas. Around Lake Gogebic there's more reds filling in now with more yellows present. US2 from Wakefield to Watersmeet has some patchy areas but a lot of aspen and birch are just starting to get yellow leaves, there are some decent patches of color, another week it should get a bit better. Around Iron River and Crystal Falls there is some pretty nice color around Chicagon Lake and Michigamme Reservoir. Get on some of the backroads in the Ottawa National Forest for the start of colors, each day you'll see more and more changes. Take FH16, Forest Service Road 2149, or Forest Service Road 2130 for some nice peaceful fall color drives.
Overall 30%-50%
Peak will be Sept 27th - Oct 3rd.

Northern UP
Big color change in the Keweenaw this last week, especially interior portions along US41 and in the valleys below the glacial rocky ridges north and east of Phoenix. Views from Brockway Mountain are still really green with the eastern views off the east lookout, from Keweenaw Mountain lodge and to the south on Rocky Ridge the color has started to fill in. Views on the main lookout you'll see more color south than in the western portions of the lookout towards Lake Bailey, Views to the north off Lake Superior are still pretty green, expect the last couple days it has stayed the same since the weekend, look for more color filling in the western and eastern portions of the ridges starting this weekend. Now till peak you'll still have plenty of color to be satisfied, if you don't like a lot of people stay away from mid afternoon to sunset you'll usually find 20-50 cars up there now. The drive from Calumet to Copper Harbor is really nice right now lots of color for viewing, still aways from peak but each day it's getting nicer. Lac La Belle and Bete Grise are starting to get their color, views from the beach I was noticing color on Bohemia, Mt Houghton, and Barebluff. The Portage Canal has started turning color now, lots of color of yellows filling in with some reds popping through now. Color from Painesdale to Twin Lakes is really nice, it has really started to pop now, won't be long before this area hits peak. Further to the west along M26 color is pretty good around the Firesteel rivers. Areas near Greenland are pretty good and then further towards Ontonagon things aren't as colorful yet, expect along the many rivers off the highway. South near Mass City color is ok but not yet real nice. Taking US41 from Houghton to Chassell there is more color, lots of nice reds along the road and you can see across the canal and notice the color changes. Outside Chassell along the Sturgeon Sloughs there's some bright reds right now, won't last to much longer though. US41 to Baraga color isn't to bright but has a few areas that pop. L'Anse hill towards Alberta has surprisingly been slower this year, this week though it has started catching up but the higher elevations after Alberta seem to be a bit more along. Roads outside L'Anse towards Skanee and into the Huron Mountains and near Herman are pretty colorful, less closer to Lake Superior, but those higher elevations are plentiful with reds along the marshes and swampy areas, Arvon Rd is always fun to drive and the road out to Big Ericks bridge is a wonderful experience. The drive up to Michigan's highest point (Mount Arvon) has lots of color starting, some nice reds were seen and good patchy areas of color, still some greens yet to change, some oak, birch, and aspens will make it wonderful soon after this weekend. From Convington Jct to Bruce Crossing, there is a lot of yellow starting, patchy areas along the way of red but not a ton. Covington to Amasa has filled in pretty good this last week, this is usually a very nice color drive, lots of color, after this week it should be real colorful, maybe you'll spot a moose along this stretch too.
Overall 30%-60%
Peak will be Sept 25th - Oct 1st.

Central UP
Marquette area has been slow to change, wasn't much color around McClure Dam nor around Forestville Dam. The areas around the city are still really green yet, really was affected by the more mild conditions along Lake Superior. Views from Mount Marquette are green overall, a few sections to the western views are turning now, still a long ways to go, expect the color to start getting good in another week with your best views in the first week of October, could have a bit of leaf loss by that time though. The areas north of Ishpeming and Negaunee are starting to get some nice colors, the drives on the backroads have some good patches of red and yellows especially in those marshy and swamp areas. Most of the lakes have some nice color already. If you're taking in views from Jasper Knob you'll see how patchy the color is yet. Harvey to Munising is pretty light on color right now, it isn't until you get closer to Munising that you are seeing color. Further interior off Lake Superior towards Chatham and Eben you'll see more color, so drive that stretch if you're seeking any color in the area. Down US41 from Harvey to Trenary there are some nice patches, starting filling in this week, a bit to go but decent now, plenty of green to change. If you are north of Marquette you'll want to visit Thomas Rock (aka Gobblers Knob) you'll have the best color views, things along 510 and 550 are still pretty green in the understory so you need to get up above the trees to see much color change. There area few nice areas after Little Presque Isle that are colorful with some red and closer to Big Bay color is better. If you are seeking some real nice color right now in the central UP you should drive out towards Michigamme and Three Lakes, color really has started to pop out that way. Get on some backroads and drive to see some good color this early in. The views from Sugarloaf and Hogsback will give you a nice view of the patchy color, but it isn't filled in yet like most people like, for your best views from these spots wait still around the beginning of the October.
Overall 30%-60%
Peak will be Sept 25th - Oct 3rd.

Eastern UP
In the eastern UP right now your best colors are further interior Views from Mission Hill and Naomikong Overlook are still pretty green, you can see though color has started, but being so close to Superior it far from peak. Areas around Tahquamenon falls are starting to get better, good progression this week close to 30-40% color in the area. Areas in the far eastern UP are still pretty green, maybe another week you'll start seeing better color, another 2 weeks to go at least to get real good. From the Mackinaw Bridge to Brevort Lake there aresome decent patches of color, better off Lake Michigan from Engadine to Blaney Park. M28 from I75 to Shingleton color has progressed fairly decent, some nice reds near McMillan and Seney and some near Shingleton. M77 up to Grand Marais is an ok drive right now, give it another week and should start getting pretty nice. Take the ride down Hiawatha Trail for drives through Caffey, Rexton, Garnet, and Gilchrist take it from 123 to 117. By next week there should be some good color along this stretch.
Overall 25%-40%
Peak will be Oct 1st - Oct9th.

Southern UP
In the southern UP we still aren't seeing to much color, hints of changes here and there. Expect this area of the UP to be changing latest, even the second week of October might have some decent color left over. I would say by Oct 5th color should be pretty good, should be either side of peak color at this point. For your color drives in the southern UP I suggest just driving the backroads, get off the main highways to enjoy the color. You'll come across a lot of lakes and ponds that have decent color.
Overall 15%-30%
Peak will be Oct 3rd - Oct 12th.

Fall Color Reports by Yooper Steve :: Sept 6th, 2020 :: Comments
Welcome to Week 6 of the Upper Peninsula Fall Color Report in Michigan's beautiful Upper Peninsula.
What a great week for the progression of fall colors. This last week we saw those trees literally changing before our eyes in a couple days as those temperatures dropped. There were areas I drove through two days in a row and each day it seemed to really start filling in more each day. Granted much of the areas that are really seeing that color are more interior portions of Houghton county, Baraga county, and Marquette county. Elsewhere along the Lake Superior shorelines there is now some color starting to appear. People are really starting to ask about peak color the last few weeks and I am noticing a few news agencies now starting to put out their fall color maps, be wary folks, be wary, this is an ok way to catch them but they don't keep up week to week like FunintheUP does. As I say all the time, your best time if you are planning for color somewhere in the UP to be close to peak, peak, or just past peak would be Sept 25th-Oct 5th. Those 10 days you really can't go wrong with enjoying some fall color, hitting peak exactly when you are planning 5-10 weeks out is pretty hard. I know it is difficult this year because of the situation we are in and having to book your lodging, much of it is already full. If you are able to travel on the whim you are better off, those day trips always look good. We have some of the best fall colors in the United States and each year we continue to see more and more. This year interest on the FunintheUP Fall Color Report page has quadrupled in traffic from last year, and this is only week 6. I am happy to bring you as accurate and timely information to help in your planning.
If you enjoy the work I do with FunintheUP feel free to help support my independent work by donating any $$ amount if you feel like you have enjoyed FunintheUP over the years. Western UP
When people seek great color, they often head over to the western UP. Why is that, because it has some of the most dense forest lands of hard maples of anywhere in the UP, much of that being in the Ottawa National Forest. Your more popular areas like Lake of the Clouds are seeing people this week seeking those big views of the lake below. Are people noticing color yet? They sure are, it is faint still, most are noticing a lot of green, but there is a hint of color change, those leaves are beginning to see that yellowish hue, a few reds down below on the river were being seen, you do have to look though, reds in this area are slim pickings, much of the views are yellows and oranges from Lake of the Clouds. If you seek reds you'll want to take a drive down South Boundary Road during 65% to peak color. You'll also want to stop at Summit Peak for more reds than from Lake of the Clouds. Also no stop is complete without stopping at Presque Isle River to view the beautiful waterfalls, you might get lucky with a recent rain for an awe inspiring flow of water, you can't go wrong when water is lower as well, the textures are amazing. Now onto Ironwood, this week along Black River Rd you're starting to get some reds and oranges popping up, more interior than closer to Lake Superior. There are a few colors popping up like orange and yellows along the Black River from the lookout spots for the waterfalls, but still lots of green. When up on Mount Zion in Ironwood, a location that gives you views of the Porkies, Copper Peak, and allows you to see into Wisconsin and Minnesota on a clear day you're seeing those treetops turning color, lots of green but those hues of yellow are really starting to show. Around Bessember and Wakefield color is happening, little hotspots along Highway US2. Little hotspots along the ski hills as well. Taking M26 from Wakefield to Bergland you'll notice some reds and oranges showing up. Saw some nice color starting around Lake Gogebic on the lake. Take a drive up M64 from Bergland to Silver City week 8-10 and you'll love it, make sure to stop at the Konteka and have dinner just before sunset and watch the bears being fed, BIG ONEs to, and you might also get lucky to see a wolf. Marinesco area had a few colors showing up, but there's lots of poplars here along this stretch of US2 and pines, you won't get much color until about week 8 as those yellows start popping up on the poplar and birch.

Northern UP
The Keweenaw, those who have been here say it is their favorite place in the Upper Peninsula, you wouldn't know unless you've been here. Come visit and you'll see why. Copper Harbor is now starting to get a little hint of color change. The eastern end of Copper Harbor looking out to East Bluff is slight yellowish hues. Look south for your best color now from Brockway Mountain, the main lookout. You're now seeing a little red and orange pop up on the hillside, still very green to most people, it isn't until about week 8 when it should be getting to around 50%-80% color. US41 drive from Copper Harbor to Phoenix is looking good right now, even this early, lots of color starting on the covered road. It was about 5 weeks ago when I first saw some color along this stretch but I had to look for it obviously, but each week you're seeing more and more. This is one of the most beautiful color drives you'll ever have anywhere in the US, there is a reason it is always rated highly for fall colors, again unless you've been there done that you wouldn't even understand. Views from Bete Grise looking out at the bluffs of Mt. Bohemia, Mt. Houghton, and Bare Bluff still have a lot of green yet, these are a bit slower to progress, so skip this area until about week 8 for those colors to start popping. Sit upon the signing sands of Bete Grise and take in all it's beauty during peak color season. Driving from Lac La Belle to Big Traverse was pretty green yet, didn't see to much color yet, a few trees here and there right now, wait for another 2 weeks for some good color to start popping. Interior portions around Mohawk, Calumet, Lake Linden, Dollar Bay, Boston loc, and Hancock are seeing plenty of color, you can't but help see the trees changing. Along the Portage Canal views from the lookout on US41 Quincy Hill are very green yet, another week you should start seeing some good changes, another 2 weeks we might be hitting 50-60%, we shall see what this week of 40s at night does. Outside Houghton along US41 and M26 color is happening, nice reds popping up on your way to Chassell and just outside Chassell along the Sturgeon River Sloughs, very nice reds. Painesdale to Toivola is looking good now, a few days ago it was hard to spot those reds, now you can't but help see some, nice oranges starting too. Out near Donken along the marshes are some amazing bright reds, was amazed at the change in two days here. Further down along the Firesteel rivers and to Mass City there is color but it is behind what Donken an Toivola are right now. On your way to Ontonagon you'll see more color along the little rivers before Silver City. L'Anse area is getting color, especially south near Alberta things are progressing with some oranges, not seeing much red right now though. Along Skanee Rd there is abit of color, some reds, plenty of orange, and those greens are starting to change into yellowish hues. Along Arvon Rd there is a bit of red showing up more interior along the marshes and rivers. Driving deeper into the Huron Mtns along the Slate river there is a bit of color showing up, more yellows and a bit of orange. Out to Big Ericks bridge is a bit of color, wait till week 8 for a nice color drive, then week 9 should be totally amazing if already past peak you'll still enjoy the display of yellow you'll have.

Central UP
Views from places like Sugarloaf, Mount Marquette, and Hogsback you can't go wrong with fall color. From Big Bay Thomas Rock was just starting to change, colors mostly greens with yellowish hues, a few treetops with some red and orange. Drives down 510 and 550 were still sporadic with color, lots of yellows and green is starting to fade to yellowish green now this week. Around Marquette the views from Sugarloaf and Hogsback weren't to good for color yet, another week we should see trees filling in, another two weeks and should be reaching 30-50% color possibly more depending on how cool along the lake it gets. Drives south of Ishpeming and Negaunee were filling in along ponds and rivers. More reds showing up than in the northern areas of Marquette county. Country Rd 492 there were a few reds showing up, mostly yellows right now appearing. South on M35 color was starting a little more now this last week, another week and should be getting ok, another two weeks it should be a nice drive. Looking out over Ishpeming from Jasper Knob was really green yet, a few trees you could see in the city were changing, noticed plenty of yellowish hues on the leaves though. Along M28 going to Munising from Harvey it isn't until you get towards Au Train that you see much color right now, head more south and you'll see more, another 2 weeks and it should start getting good. Around Munising color is spotty, stay south for hints of color around Wetmore, head south west towards Chatham along M94 for a bit more color. South on US41 towards Trenary there is some red showing up along the fields, plenty of yellows and a bit of orange starting to show, a few trees with color filling in.

Eastern UP
Eastern UP is coming along, views from Mission Hill aren't good right now for color, but views are always worth taking in though. Another 3 weeks color should be amazing here. Plenty of reds popping up outside the Soo and along I75. Out at Whitefish point things are still really green. The road to Crisp Point Lighthouse if you're visiting is pretty muddy and rutted out so beware. Some reds along M28 from Shingleton to Seney along the marshes. Heading down 77 there is a little color now popping up not many reds but enough yellow and a bit of orange that you know fall is coming. Things out to the far eastern UP seem to be green yet, haven't gotten many reports out that way.

Southern UP
Southern UP is starting now, a little red and orange is showing up on trees now. Greens are getting into those yellowish hues, still pretty green though. We shall see if things start popping this week in the south to be able to write a bit more, it is very green yet.

Fall Color Reports by Yooper Steve :: Sept 1st, 2020 :: Comments
Welcome to Week 5 of the Upper Peninsula Fall Color Report in Michigan's beautiful Upper Peninsula.
This week we are seeing colors along some of those Lake Superior shorelines now. Overall color is 3-12%. We had some nights where temps dropped into the 40s and that helped to jumpstart some color change in those slower to change areas. This week we should really start seeing some areas starting to get more filled in. There are many trees now with the hues of the leaves changing from that dark hunter green and grass green color to a lighter hue of yellowish green. From the drone I have seen lots of tree tops with good color starting, still very green yet. Read regional reports below.

Western UP
Areas along Lake Superior now off the Porcupine Mountains are starting to see a hint of color change, mostly those greens starting to fade into yellowish green hues. A few trees can be seen off Lake of the Clouds overlook with hints of yellow and orange, a couple trees were spotted with a hint of red starting along the Carp River below. Interior along South Boundary Rd there is plenty of color starting, nothing that stands out much as of yet. In the Ironwood, Bessemer, and Wakefield areas there is a little red popping up along the highway and lots of yellowish green hued leaves on trees. Didn't get a chance to get to the ski hills to see if things were changing this week. M28 from Wakefield there is a slight change of color around Bergland, a few reds and oranges spotted along Lake Gogebic.

Northern UP
Copper Harbor is starting to get yellowish green now, still a ton of green, this area is slower to change than the interior portions along US41 in the higher elevations. Your best color always stars from the southern to southwest viewing angles at Brockway Mtn and as color change progresses the eastern areas off Brockway get caught up and the northern views as well. There is usually a two week period that will give you a nice display of color. Along US41 from Lake Medora to Calumet, US41 provided enough color that tells you fall is upon us. Colors were red, orange, and yellows, lots of leaves changing green to yellowish hues. Views from the Cliffs and Madison Lookout were showing lots of trees with color starting another two weeks should be really noticeable. Areas along the Portage Canal are still very green, seeing a few trees around M26 and US41 outside Houghton and Hancock starting to get some red. The drive along M26 from Painesdale to Twin Lakes was showing signs of 10-12% color now. L'Anse area, Skanee, Herman areas were seeing some change, Arvon Rd showed some reds and yellows. Not much color change at Plumbago lake right now but you are seeing the trees leaves getting a slight yellow, was expecting more color.

Central UP
The drive from Covington Jct to Michigamme has some color along the stretch, but nothing that really sticks out to you yet. Was expecting to see some decent change around Beaufort lake and the Spurr river but it's still very green. I think all that rain really killed that color from progressing much, will be interesting to see what happens now this week if things cool down. Looking for signs of color change around Ishpeming, Negaunee, and Marquette was a challenge, not much to report, still green, very green. Didn't make it up 550 or 510 this week, there should be some color in sections where rivers and ponds are, but don't expect much. South of Ishpeming on 581 around the ponds where I saw some reds early on are starting to fill in a bit with more reds and elsewhere a few locations with some yellows and oranges. M35 wasn't progressing much, occasional tree here and there with yellows, plenty with yellowish green filling in though. US41 south of Harvey some color being seen, seems more people spotting color closer to Kiva and Trenary. The Munising area is seeing a few trees changing. Along the lake and rivers there is a bit of color, but you do have to look for it.

Eastern UP
Still pretty green yet. Seney stretch a few spots with some red, plenty of leaves starting to get that yellowish hue. A few places along Germfask seeing some color and down near Blaney Park seeing color now. US2 to Naubinway some trees have started changing, seeing more further inland off Lake Michigan. Near St. Ignace a few trees with red, but not much in way of color other than your yellow hues starting in the leaves. Further north outside the Soo people are seeing some reds and plenty of trees with color, around 5% in much of the area. A few trees along the Tahquamenon river are changing. Newberry area and McMillan area is seeing some color, mostly yellowish hues, occasional red popping up, a few oranges.

Southern UP
Further south you go less color. Outside Menominee don't expect to see any color right now. Outside Iron Mtn and Norway there's a few trees here and there with color starting, not many reds spotted yet, plenty of orange spotted, lots of yellowish hues starting in the leaves along the roadsides. US2 from Hermansville to Escanaba very green, not seeing much in way of color change. Around some of the ponds and lakes you'll start seeing more color this week.

Fall Color Reports by Yooper Steve :: Aug 25th, 2020 :: Comments
Welcome to Week 4 of the Upper Peninsula Fall Color Report in Michigan's beautiful Upper Peninsula.
This week overall colors are starting to get into the 4-10% range. Many of the tree leaves are now starting to get that light yellow hue to them and that dark green is starting to fade. Chlorophyll will starting lessing in the leaves and but still could reverse some with rains and warmer evenings which slows down the process of fall colors bring produced. I hope we don't get any more hot days in the 80s and 90s, that will certainly put a damper on the color season and leaves will die off quickly if that happens. This week there wasn't many places I was at where I didn't see some color change along roads and in the woods. Most of the northern, central, and western areas of the UP have plenty of color appearing and you know fall is quickly approaching. This week was a fairly warm week both during the days and the nights didn't cool down as much as we needed to to bring colors change up into the teens. It appears this week the temperatures won't drop to much and there may be some light rain. Usually by week 5 and 6 we really start seeing some nice color developing. Read regional reports below.

Western UP
The Western UP, one of the best areas to see fall colors and the two most popular spots being, Copper Peak and the Porkies are now starting to see some tree tops with color. Views from these amazing spots are still very green but you can see that green starting to fade in the leaves. Interior along South Boundary Rd in the Porcupine Mountains State Park you will see a few trees with leaves changing, this is a wonderful drive to make during your western UP trip. Here is your itinerary of the Porkies, visit Lake of the Clouds, Summit Peak, Overlooked and Greenstone falls, Presque Isle River see all the waterfalls and the mouth of the river on Lake Superior. Heading from the western end of the Porkies and down 519 you'll see some reds and oranges with lots of green hues all the way to M28 in Wakefield. From Wakefield to Ironwood and especially around the ski hills I noticed a good amount of change, still lots of green, another 2 weeks and things should really start popping. Black River Road to the mouth of the Black River is a wonderful drive and you must stop at the falls as well, 5 of them, some of the largest in the UP. The color is just starting to appear along the road now.

Northern UP
In the Keweenaw color is starting, not so much in the Copper Harbor area right now but you will notice color change along US41 from Phoenix to Keweenaw Mountain Lodge. Views from Brockway Mountain were very green and will stay pretty green for another 3 weeks, you could however see some of that green fading especially to the south towards Lake Medora and south of Voodoo Mountain. US41 from Phoenix to Calumet has color, enough that you know fall is almost here. Not much to see along Cliff drive expect near the swampy areas with some crimson reds starting, this area changes really quickly from reds to dull. Over in the Traprock valley color has started with some trees here and there with color along the roads, views from the sky look really green yet. M26 from Lake Linden to Hancock has color here and there, a few reds, and more yellow green hues. Outside Houghton to Chassell there is color, much of it yellow and some light oranges with a few reds popping up. Out along M26 from Painsedale heading towards Firesteel rivers you will see more color closer to Toivola and Twin Lake than further west along M26. Misery Bay road to Misery Bay there are some nice reds alongside the lakes and ponds.

Central UP
Much of the Marquette area in the lower elevations is really green yet, a few trees here and there with some color. Views from Mount Marquette are very green, not much to see other than some spectacular views of the Marquette harbor and over to Hogsback, Presque Isle, and Sugarloaf. South of Negaunee and Ishpeming there is color starting further north along the backroads, some was seen along M35 and Co Road 581.

Eastern UP
Not a lot of color changing yet around Munising or Grand Marais, just a few trees here and there were spotted. Along Lake Superior there is a lot of green, don't expect much color change for another 3 weeks. Over towards there Soo there is a bit of color change now, some reds popping up. Make sure you get your views at Mission Hill Overlook you'll love it for fall color viewing, or anytime of the year. Not much else to report over in the eastern end of the UP.

Southern UP
Color here and there with some areas by the small lakes and ponds changing. North of Iron Mountain and Norway you'll see a few trees with some reds and oranges, mostly green yet. Further south there aren't very many trees even showing yellow hues yet, still pretty warm.

Fall Color Reports by Yooper Steve :: Aug 18th, 2020 :: Comments
Welcome to Week 3 of the Upper Peninsula Fall Color Report in Michigan's beautiful Upper Peninsula.
This past week it was starting to feel like fall a little more with the cooler nights we have been getting. The cooler nights are what we need to really start getting the fall colors going. Most places you go now across the UP you will see plenty of trees with color change. Don't worry peak color is still weeks off but it could come soon if things go perfectly for that to happen. Right now I am predicting peak colors to start hitting areas of the central, northern, and western UP sometime around the 3rd week of September, at least it should be around 60-70% color which is a very good amount of color. Regions along Lake Superior like up in the Keweenaw near Copper Harbor, shoreline areas at the Porkies, views from Sugarloaf, and areas around Munising will be slower to reach peak. Overall right now all signs are pointing to an early season of fall color compared to last couple years, but, and I say but, things can change quickly, color change can slow down and actually reverse during the early weeks of color change. The amount of rain we have been getting is helping to ensure that things don't dry out to fast. If we see some longer periods or to many days with temperatures reach into the 80s and 90s things could dry up and the leaves could die before they even have a chance to display their beauty. Next week, week 4 will be back to normal regional reports.
Overall we are seeing 2-5% color change.

Fall Color Report for Week 3 will be updated on Wednesday night. Wasn't able to get it finished for Monday and Tuesday.
Welcome to Week 2 of the Upper Peninsula Fall Color Report in Michigan's beautiful Upper Peninsula.
I didn't get out as much as I was hoping to this past week to check on the fall colors, but this week I am planning to, as I may have more time. This past week we had another warm week here in the Upper Peninsula and also recorded a few inches of rain, much needed rain. Things are beginning to change, temperatures are starting to fall a bit during the evenings which is a requirement to get the colors started for the fall season here in the Upper Peninsula. Things are still very green yet and will be for another 3-4 weeks and by then we should be reaching 20-50% color across much of the Upper Peninsula a lot depends on how dry it stays and if we get those cooler nights. I think we will have a beautiful colorful season, I am alreading seeing a few nice reds on trees around in the swampy areas and along some inland lakes and along rivers. Right now my prediction on fall color peakness is a bit premature at this point but I do think that we will be slightly earlier than last year across most of the UP.

Western UP
Out in the Western UP of Michigan there is a bit of color starting in the Ironwood and Bessemer areas. Very minimal that most people wouldn't notice. Black River Road just a few trees were seen with color, you have to really look though. From Bruce Crossing to Wakefield there wasn't much seen in the way of color. Along the shores of Lake Gogebic there is just a few trees with some color.

Northern UP
Color in the Keweenaw is now a bit more noticeable, US41 from Phoenix to Copper Harbor you'll see some orange and yellow here and there as you drive. A few spots of color along Eagle Harbor cutoff road in the higher elevations, nothing that most people would notice. Views from the Cliffs was very green yet, was really hard to see any color change yet. From Calumet to Hancock on US41 there are some noticeable colors starting in the area near the airport. Around Houghton there is a slight big of color change mostly those oranges a few reds are wanting to start. Outside Houghton near Toivola and out near Twin Lakes there is a bit of color now, still very green. We should start seeing 5% color this week if we see some cooler nights.

Central UP
There is just a little color starting across the central Upper Peninsula. A few trees here and there along US41 from Covington Jct to Michigamme are starting to turn. There are plenty of leaves now getting a lighter hue. A few swampy areas have some of those swamp maples starting their deep reds. More trees along Hwy 581 and 565 have just some hints of color on the leaves. Big Bay and south along Co Rd 550 there are just a few trees with some yellow and orange. Views from Mount Marquette were totally green and will be starting to see some tops of trees probably next week with some oranges and yellows.

Eastern UP
A few trees with some color starting.

Southern UP
A few trees with some color starting.

Fall Color Reports by Yooper Steve :: Aug 2nd, 2020 :: Comments
Welcome to Week 1 of the Upper Peninsula Fall Color Report in Michigan's beautiful Upper Peninsula.
It is that time of the year, the fall color report has started. Already this last week myself and others across the Upper Peninsula have been seeing a few changes in colors amidst the leaves. It isn't unusual as this time of the year things start to change as we are more than half-way through summer. Usually about mid July to late July we spot a few changes, but don't worry peak season is many weeks away yet. If you are thinking about planning your trip you should start thinking about it. With the help of the FunintheUP Fall Color Report you will be able to follow the progression of the colors week by week for the next 10-12 weeks. If you have any pictures of fall colors wherever you are in the UP feel free to send them to me at fall @ funintheup.com or just message the FunintheUP facebook page.

First UP fall color video for 2020.

Western UP
No Reports yet.

Northern UP
Around the Houghton area there are colors now popping up around town along side streets. Along US41 from Houghton to Chassell you can see a hint of color change. On M28 outside Painesdale and before Toivola there are some trees with some light orange starting, haven't noticed the reds yet, perhaps this coming week I will see some reds starting. Out near Donken along the marshes you could see a hint of color change with the swamp maples, these trees usually give a bright red display early on before the first week of September. Up into the Keweenaw along US41 from Mohawk to Phoenix I noticed some trees with color, but if you weren't paying attention you probably wouldn't even notice. Up near Delaware and Lake Medora along US41 a few trees are showing just a little color.

Central UP
A few trees with color I noticed off Co Rd 581 south of Ishpeming. Didn't see much other color as my driving was limited this last week around the area. There were a few trees that I saw from Three Lakes to Michigamme that had some light changes, expecting some noticeable color next week, especially along the Spurr River area. Marquette area I didn't notice anything yet, I am sure there are some trees with some early color.

Disclaimer: Keep in mind this report is a guide and in no way is it totally inclusive of every spot for fall color in the Upper Peninsula. I drive hundreds of miles each week across the U.P. viewing the fall colors and it is physically impossible to be in all places and analyze every area. The best times to come up for fall color if you weren't even to pay attention to the fall color reports would be the last 4 days of September and the first 4 days of October. Keep in mind color change happens slowly along Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, Lake of the Clouds overlook, Brockway Mountain, Pictured Rocks, Whitefish Point, Mackinac Island, and Drummond Island. Some of these areas can be two weeks behind the interior portions of the Western UP, Northern UP, and Central UP. Also the Southern UP can be up to 1 week and in some cases 2 weeks behind as well. If you wait until after October 10th any year you will almost always be viewing mostly browns, yellows, and a few remaining trees with little color left. It isn't to say after October 10th there isn't nice color, but historically after Oct 10th peak color season is usually done for.
